What is Google AI Mode?

AI search, explained beginner Verified 2026-09-06

In short

AI Mode is a conversational tab in Google Search that answers your query with a generated response and follow-up questions, instead of a page of links. It launched in the US in May 2025 and reached India soon after. It uses Google's normal index, so normal SEO access rules still decide who appears.

Key points

  • A separate tab in Google Search that answers conversationally, powered by Gemini.
  • It runs query fan-out, issuing several background searches and assembling one answer from them.
  • AI Overviews sit on top of results. AI Mode replaces the results page entirely.
  • It is fed by Googlebot and the normal index. There is no separate AI Mode crawler to allow or block.
  • Clicks from it count as ordinary Google organic traffic in your analytics, which hides its effect.
01

The short version

AI Mode is a tab in Google Search where the result is a conversation, not a list. You ask, Google's Gemini model writes an answer with links woven into it, and you can ask a follow-up that builds on the last one. It launched for US users at Google I/O in May 2025, came to India within weeks, and has been spreading across countries and languages since.

If AI Overviews were Google dipping a toe, AI Mode is the actual swim. An Overview is a summary bolted above the familiar results. AI Mode removes the familiar results and keeps the summary.

02

How it works: query fan-out

Google's own name for the mechanism is query fan-out. Ask AI Mode one question and it quietly issues several related searches, on the same index Googlebot has always built, reads the top material from each, and assembles a single answer with citations.

That has a practical consequence people miss. Your page can be cited for a question nobody ever typed. If the fan-out generates a sub-query your page answers well, you can surface inside an answer to a broader question you would never rank for directly. Pages that answer one specific thing completely do disproportionately well under this mechanism, which is convenient, because it is the same shape this whole course keeps recommending.

AI Mode vs AI Overviews

AI Overviews AI Mode
WhereAbove normal results, sometimesA separate tab, always on when opened
The results pageStill there, pushed downReplaced by the answer
Follow-up questionsNo, each search starts freshYes, conversational
TriggerGoogle decides per queryThe user chooses the tab
LinksA few sources, plus the list belowLinks inside and beside the answer only

The strategic difference is who chooses. Overviews appear when Google decides a query suits them. AI Mode is chosen by the user, and every query in it produces a generated answer. As more people make that tab their habit, the share of searches that end without a traditional results page grows with it.

04

What it means for your site

  • Access is decided by the rules you already have. AI Mode draws on the standard index. If Googlebot can crawl and index you, you are eligible. There is no separate AI Mode crawler.
  • Opting out is blunt. Blocking Google-Extended does not remove you from AI Mode or AI Overviews; that toggle governs Gemini model training. Staying out of AI features means snippet controls like nosnippet or max-snippet, which also degrade your normal listings. Google has tied the two fates together, deliberately.
  • Attribution goes dark. A visit from AI Mode arrives in analytics as plain Google organic. You cannot cleanly separate it, so falling clicks with steady impressions in Search Console is often the only visible symptom. Search Console does include AI Mode activity in its performance data, blended into the totals.
  • The citation logic is the familiar one. Direct answers, evidence a model can lift, a resolvable identity. Nothing platform-specific has emerged that outweighs those.

When this does not apply

If your traffic is navigational, people searching your brand to reach your site, AI Mode changes little, because the answer to a navigational query is still your link. The queries where it bites are informational: definitions, comparisons, how-tos, exactly the traffic most content programmes were built on.

FAQ

What is Google AI Mode? A conversational search experience inside Google, available as a separate tab, where Gemini writes an answer to your query with linked sources and you can ask follow-up questions. It launched in the US in May 2025 and expanded internationally, with India among the first markets.

How is AI Mode different from AI Overviews? An AI Overview is a generated summary shown above the normal results for some queries. AI Mode replaces the results page entirely with a conversational answer, for every query asked in that tab. Overviews appear when Google chooses; AI Mode runs whenever the user chooses it.

Is AI Mode available in India? Yes. India was among the first countries after the US launch in 2025, initially in English, and availability has widened since. For an India-focused site it is not a future concern but a current one.

How do I appear in AI Mode results? Be indexable by Googlebot, and be the best direct answer to specific questions inside your topic. AI Mode retrieves through query fan-out, several background searches feeding one answer, so pages that completely answer one narrow question can be cited even for broader prompts they never ranked for.

Can I block AI Mode from using my site? Only bluntly. Blocking Google-Extended stops Gemini training but does not remove you from AI Mode or AI Overviews. Staying out of the answers requires snippet controls such as nosnippet or max-snippet, or deindexing, all of which also hurt your ordinary search presence.

Does AI Mode reduce clicks to websites? It removes the traditional results page, so for informational queries the pressure on clicks is real, and its visits are indistinguishable from normal Google organic in analytics. The measurable evidence sits with AI Overviews, covered on the next page, where the same dynamic has published numbers.

What is query fan-out? Google's term for how AI Mode researches an answer: one user question is expanded into several related searches run in the background, and the answer is assembled from what they retrieve. It is why appearing in AI Mode depends on answering specific sub-questions well.
